The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for calculating a traffic congestion index. The method for calculating a traffic congestion index from a vehicle which drives on a road provided with first and second roof sensors comprises: a step of calculating the total area of vehicles passing through the road during a unit of time; a step of calculating the number of vehicles (hereinafter, referred to as standard traffic volume) passing through the road during a unit of time by dividing the total area by a standard area of one vehicle; and a step of using the standard traffic volume as a traffic congestion index of the road, wherein each area of the vehicles is calculated by using the maximum length and the maximum width of each vehicle.

    교통혼잡지표 산출 방법 및 장치가 제공된다. 제1 및 제2루프 센서들이 설치된 도로를 주행하는 차량으로부터 교통혼잡지표를 산출하는 방법은, 단위시간 동안 도로를 통과한 차량들의 총 면적을 산출하는 단계와, 총 면적을 차량 1대의 표준 면적으로 나누어 단위시간 동안 도로를 통과한 차량의 수(이하, '표준 교통량'이라 함)를 산출하는 단계와, 표준 교통량을 도로의 교통혼잡지표로서 사용하는 단계를 포함하며, 차량들 각각의 면적은, 각 차량의 최대 길이와 최대 폭을 이용해 산출될 수 있다.
