To suppress engine stall in shift changeover.SOLUTION: A proceeding direction of a vessel 10 is determined from vessel velocity V by acquiring a command signal, controlling forward and backward proceeding shift based on the command signal and acquiring the vessel velocity V. An outboard engine ECU 40A executes compensation control to increase output of an engine 16 based on the vessel velocity V when changing over a shift position in a forward and backward switching mechanism 44 from a neutral position to a position corresponding to the opposite direction of the proceeding direction of the vessel 10.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 8
