To facilitate safe and comfortable pickup and drop-off of passengers of an autonomous vehicle.SOLUTION: The present disclosure relates to use of ambient lighting conditions during pickup and drop-off of passengers and articles by an autonomous type vehicle. For example, a map of ambient lighting conditions for a stop location may be generated by receiving ambient lighting conditions data of a predetermined stop location and placing this data on a plurality of buckets based on time and one of stop locations. Next, the vehicle 100 may be controlled in an autonomous drive mode in order to stop for passengers by observing the ambient lighting conditions of both of different stop locations 282, 284, and possibly using a map.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2B
