To provide a wire grid polarizing element having excellent heat dissipation properties as well as excellent transmission and polarization separation characteristics with respect to obliquely incident light in a wide range of incidence angles.SOLUTION: A hybrid wire grid polarizing element 1 comprising an inorganic material and an organic material is provided with: a substrate 10 comprising an inorganic material; a grid structure 20 comprising an organic material, in which a base part 21 provided on the substrate 10 and a plurality of projections 22 are integrally formed; and a functional film 30 comprising a metal material and partially coating a part of the projections 22. The projections 22 have a tapered shape that decreases in width progressively away from the base part 21. The functional film 30 wraps over top parts of the projections 22, and does not coat the base part 21 and bottom sides of the projections 22. A surface of the functional film 30 is rounded and bulges in a width direction of the projections 22. A maximum width (WMAX) of the functional film 30 is equal to or greater than a bottom width (WB) of the projections 22.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
