To provide a method of detecting a contact position between a wheel and rail to make it possible to detect the contact position over an entire tread of the wheel concurrently with a lateral pressure by reducing the effect due to the lateral pressure.SOLUTION: The method of detecting a contact position between a wheel and a rail includes steps of: setting a boundary condition of a lateral pressure expectation load on a finite element model of a wheel W, performing a finite element method, and calculating a neutral position N where strain is zero on a surface on the flange side and on a surface on the rim side of a plate part 5 of the finite element model; setting a strain measurement position M of the wheel W based on the neutral position N, performing a wheel weight and lateral pressure load test on the wheel W, and measuring strain at the strain measurement position M; and performing a run test of a train car mounted with the wheel W and detecting the contact position between the wheel W and the rail by measuring the strain at the strain measurement position M.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 5
