Geometrical study by so-called method of "envelopes"; hypothetical case assumed in which complete revolution is made around axle center at contact of wheel and rail; rail sweeps remainder of space entirely outside of wheel; surface of revolution which forms limit and envelope of swept space will be entirely on outside of wheel and can have nothing in common with it except tangent points which appear on two meridians.
