To provide a vehicle motion state estimation device and method capable of suppressing a deterioration in steering stability and vibration-damping performance even in a situation in which the estimation accuracy of a vertical motion state amount deteriorates such as in slipping of a wheel.SOLUTION: A vehicle motion state estimation device sets the damping force of a suspension for connecting wheels of a vehicle and a vehicle body. The vehicle motion state estimation device includes a vertical motion cause wheel speed component estimation part for estimating a wheel speed component caused by the vertical motion of the vehicle on the basis of travel state information of the vehicle, a vertical motion estimation part for estimating a vertical motion state amount of the vehicle on the basis of the wheel speed component, an estimation accuracy calculation part for calculating the estimation accuracy of the vertical motion state amount on the basis of the travel state information, and a damping force control part of setting the upper limit and the lower limit of the output range of the damping force of the suspension on the basis of the vertical motion state amount and the estimation accuracy.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
