To shorten the time from when parking operation is performed while a vehicle is traveling until when the vehicle stops by brake control.SOLUTION: A vehicle control device comprises: a parking mechanism; a brake device for applying a braking force to driving wheels; and a brake control device which can perform brake control to apply a braking force to the driving wheels independently from brake operation by a driver. The brake control device makes the brake device operate to a degree in which a braking force is not generated before a shift position is switched to a parking range by a shift operation by the driver and controls the brake device so that a braking force is generated from the brake device when the shift position is switched to the parking range by a shift operation by the driver.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 6
