To provide a damper for a railroad car capable of reducing both of power consumption and manufacturing costs.SOLUTION: A damper 1 for a railroad car includes: a cylinder 2; a piston 3 movably inserted into the cylinder 2 and dividing the inside of the cylinder 2 into an extension-side chamber R1 and a pressure-side chamber R2; a tank 5; a first passage 6 and a first bypass passage 7 communicating the extension-side chamber R1 and the pressure-side chamber R2; a second passage 8 and a second bypass passage 9 communicating the pressure-side chamber R2 and the tank 5; a first solenoid valve unit V1 having a first variable relief valve 21 disposed on the first passage 6, a first opening/closing valve 22 disposed on the first bypass passage 7, and a first solenoid 23 for adjusting a valve opening pressure of the first variable relief valve 21 and opening and closing the first opening/closing valve 22; and a second solenoid valve unit V2 having a second variable relief valve 24 disposed on the second passage 8, a second opening/closing valve 25 disposed on the second bypass passage 9, and a second solenoid 26 for adjusting a valve opening pressure of the second variable relief valve 24 and opening/closing the second opening/closing valve 25.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
