To enable a correct detection operation without requiring a driver's input operation even on a road whose shape or structure is complicated when detecting a type of the road on which a vehicle is traveling.SOLUTION: An area of an elongated shape, such as ellipse or rectangle, is allowed to be used by previously determining a relation among each reference position information of a first point and a second point, determination condition information including a shape of the area, and output information for every position of a detection object. By using the area of the elongated shape, a probability to detect a position of an own vehicle at timing when the own vehicle is passing within the area is increased even when the own vehicle is traveling at a high speed. Furthermore, since it is not necessary to widen an area size in the road width direction, a road on which the own vehicle is traveling and another adjacent road can be certainly distinguished. An optimum area shape or area size can be selected as necessary based on a structure or a shape of an actual road. A type of the road is changed when passage of the areas of the first point and the second point is detected sequentially.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1

    【課題】車両が走行している道路の種類を検出する場合に、形状や構造が複雑な道路においても、運転者の入力操作を必要とすることなく正しい検出動作を可能にすること。【解決手段】検知対象の場所毎に、第1地点および第2地点の各基準位置情報と、領域の形状を含む判定条件情報と、出力情報との関係を事前に定めておき、楕円形や長方形のような細長い形状の領域の使用を可能にする。細長い形状の領域を使うことにより、自車両が高速で走行している場合でも、自車両が領域内を通過しているタイミングで自車両の位置を検出できる確率が高くなる。しかも、道幅方向の領域サイズを広くする必要がないので自車両が走行している道路と隣接する別の道路とを確実に区別できる。実際の道路の構造や形状に基づき、必要に応じて最適な領域形状や領域サイズを選択できる。第1地点と第2地点の領域通過を順に検知した場合に道路の種類を切り替える。【選択図】図1
