To predict an occurrence of congestion and estimate a traveling environment of a vehicle when probe information cannot be obtained.SOLUTION: A traveling environment estimation method is a method of detecting a surrounding environment of an own vehicle and estimating a traveling environment based on the detected information of the surrounding environment. In the case that an adjacent lane adjacent to an own vehicle traveling lane exists, the traveling environment estimation method estimates that the possibility of an occurrence of congestion on the own traveling lane ahead of the own vehicle is higher when lane change of a leading vehicle traveling in the own vehicle traveling lane to the adjacent lane is detected and it is determined that a speed of an immediately leading vehicle traveling immediately in front of the own vehicle is lower than a predetermined threshold speed than when lane change is not detected and it is not determined that the speed of the immediately leading vehicle is lower than the predetermined threshold speed.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
