PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem that at start of an internal combustion engine immediately after execution of preheating control for electrically heating a first catalyst that is an electrical heating type catalyst before start of the internal combustion engine, insufficient warming-up of a second catalyst disposed downstream of the first catalyst deteriorates purification performance and thus when a flow rate of exhaust gas exceeding the entire purification capacity of the first catalyst and the second catalyst is supplied to the first catalyst and the second catalyst, there is a possibility that emissions might be deteriorated due to insufficient purification of the exhaust gas by using the first catalyst and the second catalyst.SOLUTION: In a predetermined period after start of an internal combustion engine after preheating control is executed, a flow rate of exhaust gas discharged from the internal combustion engine is set to a first exhaust gas flow rate at a level enabling the exhaust gas to be purified by using a first catalyst.     【課題】内燃機関始動前に電気加熱式触媒である第1触媒を電気加熱するプレヒート制御直後の内燃機関始動時おいては、第1触媒の下流に配置された第2触媒は十分に暖機されておらず浄化能が低くなる。そのため、第1触媒と第2触媒の全体の浄化能力を超えた排気ガスの流量が第1触媒及び第2触媒に供給された場合には、第1触媒及び第2触媒で排気ガスを浄化しきれずにエミッションが悪化してしまう虞がある。【解決手段】プレヒート制御を実行して内燃機関の始動後の所定期間は、内燃機関から排出される排気ガスの流量を第1触媒で浄化可能な程度の第1排気ガス流量に設定し、前記所定期間は、第2触媒が活性温度に達するまでの期間とする。【選択図】図4
