PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical encoder which can obtain an accurate detection value if the gap between a rotary slit plate and a light receiving element is varied.SOLUTION: When light from a light emitting element (3) is detected by a signal generation light receiving element (2) on a base board (1) via a rotary slit plate (4) and a pulse signal is output, an abnormality is made known by an abnormality notification unit according to the state of light reception of abnormality detecting light receiving elements (5, 6) on the base board near at least one side of the signal generation light receiving element.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
