PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an attenuation force variable type shock absorber which is compact in size, and can perform difference adjustment with a compression-side stroke and an elongation-side stroke as initial settings.SOLUTION: A front fork 10 of an embodiment comprises an outer tube 20, an inner tube 21, a piston rod 26, a piston 70, an oil sump chamber Re, an oil chamber S0, a rod-side oil chamber S2, a piston-side oil chamber S1, and an attenuation force variable device 50. The attenuation force variable device 50 comprises: a main valve 60 which generates an attenuation force by controlling a flow of oil which is generated by a slide of the piston 70 in the inner tube 21 so as to be switchable; a pilot chamber 61 which introduces a part of the flow of the oil therein, and makes inner pressure in a valve-closing direction act on the main valve 60; a pilot valve 110 which adjusts the inner pressure of the pilot chamber 61 so as to be switchable; and a communication passage 72d which makes the pilot chamber 61 and the rod-side oil chamber S2 communicate with each other.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 4
