PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To restrict noise emitted by teeth, which results from backlash, without increasing the number of components and to achieve a structure that is able to reduce steering feeling in the start of steering wheel rotation.SOLUTION: A worm shaft 6a is supported so as to be displaceable in an axial direction, with respect to a housing 3, on the basis of the fact that it receives an engagement reaction force arising in the part where worm teeth 7a and worm wheel 5 engage. A groove width for the worm teeth 7a in the axial direction is continuously or gradually decreased as it locates away from the initial engagement position with respect to the worm wheel 5 towards both sides in the axial direction. Thus, backlash in the part where the worm teeth 7a engage with the worm wheel 5 continuously or gradually decreases as this engagement part moves from the initial engagement position towards both the sides in the axial direction.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1

    【課題】部品点数を増やす事なく、バックラッシュに基づく歯打ち音の発生を抑え、しかも、ステアリングホイールの回転開始時の操舵感を軽くできる構造を実現する。【解決手段】ウォーム軸6aを、ハウジング3に対して、ウォーム歯7aとウォームホイール5との噛合部で発生する噛み合い反力を受ける事に基づいて軸方向に変位可能な状態で支持する。軸方向に関するウォーム歯7aの溝幅を、ウォームホイール5に対する初期噛合位置から軸方向両側に離れるに従って連続的に又は段階的に小さくする。これにより、ウォーム歯7aとウォームホイール5との噛合部のバックラッシュが、この噛合部が初期噛合位置から軸方向両側に移動するに従って連続的に又は段階的に小さくなる様にする。【選択図】図1
