A multilane power distribution system comprises a plurality of DC power sources Y1, Y2, G1, G2, B1, B2, R1, R2, a plurality of load devices F-EPU 1-4, A-EPU 1-4 and a switchable element 11-14. The switchable element 11-14 electrically connects two of the DC power sources when switched on. Each power source powers at least two of the load devices and each of the load devices is powered by at least two of the power sources. A control method comprises equaling 301 the voltage levels of two of the power sources and subsequently electrically connecting 303 the two power sources using the switchable element 14. Equaling 301 the voltage levels comprises changing 302 the load of at least one of the two power sources. Changing the load of a power source may be implemented without changing the total power provided to the load device e.g. when the power provided by the power source to one of the load devices is changed, the power provided to the load device by another power source is changed inversely. In an alternative implementation, equaling the voltage involves managing the state of charge of at least one of the two DC power sources.
