A method (100 fig 2) comprises converting a sterndrive boat 1 powered by an internal combustion engine (7 fig 1B) located inside the boat 1 and having an outdrive unit 15 including a direction changing gearbox (17 fig 1B) located outside the boat 1. The boat is converted to use an electrical power train 51. The engine (7) is replaced with a battery system 37. Electric motors 47a,47b are provided, replacing the gearbox (17) in the outdrive unit 15. The battery system 37 is connected to the motors 47a,47b through a drive shaft aperture 13 in which a drive shaft (11 fig 1B) had been situated between the engine (7) and the gearbox (17). The converted boat may include a charger (43 fig 4) and/or an inverter 45. The motors 47a,47b may be pancake motors stacked in series along the direction of a vertical shaft 23. The invention may allow the retention of for example a lower outdrive unit housing 29, a propeller 21, a drive shaft, a bracket 31 securing the outdrive unit, and/or steering means.
