A leeboard system for a small vessel, a canoe, comprising: a canoe 13 (figure 2); a planar leeboard 1 mounted on a gunwale 11 (figure 2) of the canoe and having leading and trailing edges, a top, a bottom, and starboard and port sides; a flexible line 3 connected at a first end to the leeboard at an attachment point 5 adjacent to the top of the leeboard, and connected at a second end to the canoe in a middle line plane; and two gunwale bars 7, 9 attached to the starboard and port sides of the leeboard adjacent to the attachment point, and extending parallel and horizontally to the leeboard, in use. In use, the leeboard may be arranged in two configurations, on either the starboard or port side of the vessel; wherein the leeboard rests against the respective side, substantially parallel to the middle line plane of the canoe, and the flexible line is held taught. A method of use comprises arranging the system against the starboard side of the canoe, lifting the leeboard out of the water, and arranging the system against the port side of the canoe.
