A method for automatic digital inspection of a railway environment comprises receiving 102 at least a first video captured by at least one camera mounted on a rail vehicle, wherein the first video comprises video frames representing the railway environment; generating 104 point clouds using the video frames, wherein a given point cloud correspond to a given set of video frames; attributing labels 106 to each pixel of the video frames for generating annotated video frames evaluating 108 the annotated video frames and their corresponding point clouds using a set of predefined rules to at least determine whether or not at least one violation is present in the railway environment; generating 110 inspection information related to at least one violation, when it is determined that at least one violation is present in the railway environment; and sending 112 the inspection information to a user device. LIDAR and/or neural networks may be employed. The predefined rules may relate to linesides, vegetation, signs, signals, cesses or obstacles. Safety speeds may be considered.
