A sacrificial mechanical fuse 10 is suitable for use with a seat back (fig.6,1), for an aircraft seat (fig.6,2), with in an energy absorbing device 3 and a guide 4, permitting guided movement of the seat back when a force is applied to an upper region of the seat back, e.g. passenger head impact from behind. The energy absorbing device is rigidly connected to a lower region of the seat back by a first connector 5, and to either a seat frame 8, or a recline mechanism (fig.8a,30) by a second connector 7; the connectors joined by the fuse. When a certain force is applied moving the connectors apart, the fuse breaks. The guide attaches to lower seat back and has a channel 13, receiving one of the second connector, the seat frame, or the recline mechanism, which is guided along the channel during movement. Preferably, the fuse is steel, having a first plate (fig.5,10a) joined by a bridge (fig.5,10c) to a second plate (fig.5,10b). The first plate may have a pair of bolt holes (fig.5,23a) for connecting to the first connector. The second plate may have an aperture (fig.5,11) for the second connector, so it may rotate about it.
