Method of controlling an engine and electric motor of a hybrid vehicle, by receiving an engine idle torque requirement (torque required to keep the engine at idle speed target), comparing an instantaneous torque demand with a reference engine idling torque (minimum idling torque achievable using base ignition retardation value), and if the instantaneous torque demand is less than the reference engine idling torque, requesting the reference engine idling torque, and using the motor to generate electricity from the excess torque, and reducing a net torque of the engine. Advantage: improved engine thermal efficiency by reducing ignition timing retardation, excessive energy from the energy is stored as electrical energy. If instantaneous torque demand is above the reference engine idling torque, more torque may be requested. A noise vibration and harshness (NVH) torque limit may be applied dependent on engine speed or mode. If instantaneous torque demand exceeds NVH torque limit, then the output torque may be biased towards the NVH torque limit.
