An apparatus for supplying charging electricity to an electric vehicle (EV) includes: a source of direct current (DC) electricity; a cable 202 connected the DC source and connectable to a receiving vehicle; and a reel 301, upon which the cable is stored when not in use, and from which the cable is extracted for connection to a vehicle. The cable is constructed from plural insulated conductors that provide a sufficient cross-sectional area for the level of direct current being supplied, while achieving sufficient flexibility to facilitate the storage of the cable on the reel. Charging an EV involves energising an electric motor 302 in a first direction 401 to facilitate extraction of the cable from the reel. The motor is deactivated and the reel locked to prevent extraction or retraction of the cable before initiating a charging session. After the charging session, the reel may be unlocked, and the motor energised in a second direction 403 to retract the cable back onto the reel. The motor may facilitate extraction of the cable 402 after a force detector 508 detects application of manual force. First and second sets of insulated conductors may be connected respectively to positive and negative terminals 503, 505 of the DC source via a respective first and second slip rings 504, 506.
