A vehicle charging station 10 comprises a processor 16 which is programmed to communicate with a vehicle 50 to obtain a unique vehicle identifier code. The vehicle comprises a rechargeable battery 54 which receives power from the charging station and includes a processor 56 which is programmed to provide data to the charging station during charging, said data including the unique vehicle identifier code. The code may be a VIN number. The charging station may be connected via the internet 20 to a website containing a register of identifier codes associated with stolen vehicles. If the received identifier code matches an entry on the stolen vehicle register, the charging station may transmit a message via a telephone line, mobile phone network, or internet to the police or registered vehicle owner on the stolen vehicle register and/or may transmit a disabling signal to the vehicle to limit its range or maximum speed. The charging station may comprise an automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) camera 22, and the charging station may notify the vehicle owner and/or police in the event of the mismatch between the number read by the camera and the number stored on a national database.
