A detection device obtains sensor data from a vehicle environment. The sensor data is used to determine a presence of a vulnerable road user (VRU) 104 (e.g. cyclist, pedestrian, horse rider or motorcyclist); a VRU identification signal is communicated to a warning device in a vehicle 102b; and the warning device communicates an alert to the driver. Thus, the driver may be alerted whilst the VRU obscured from his direct line of sight. The detection device may comprise a camera on-board another vehicle 102a, a road stud (168a, Fig.8A) or a road sign (164, Fig.3) or may be mounted to street furniture (170, Fig.8A). The warning device may relay the VRU identification signal to yet another vehicle. The warning device may include a card holder for an insurance card (142, Fig.5) and a transparent portion (124, Fig.5) to allow inspection thereof. It may include a second portion (126, Fig.6) which is movable to a closed position relative to the transparent portion, thus restricting access to the card.
