A multi-phase, energised axial flux gap propulsion torque shaft machine 10 connectable to any of a transmission, gearbox, differential, turbofan, turbine and internal combustion engine of a vehicle to replace a propulsion torque shaft of the vehicle or to replace at least a part of the propulsion torque shaft of the vehicle. The machine comprises a body housing (20, fig 1), an internal assembly (60, fig 3) mounted about a shaft and has a number of rotors (70, fig 3) mounted about the shaft in a torque transmitting relationship, each rotor having a plurality of circumferentially arranged magnetic elements. Stator arrays (80, fig 3) are mounted stationary about the shaft, each array including an array body housing a series of discrete coil-wound stators arranged circumferentially around the body. The rotors and stator arrays are stackable along a longitudinal axial length of the shaft in an alternating pattern to generate, in use, axially directed magnetic flux. The machine may also include a number of stator array spacers (62, fig 3) that are located between each pair of stator arrays and a number of rotor spacers located between each pair of rotors, to define axial air gaps. The spacers may include complementary shaped aligning formations. The internal assembly may be boltless. Additive manufacturing by laser deposition welding and/or powder bed selective laser melting may be used.
