A vehicle braking system including a cam 128 coupled to a transmission shaft or a trailing wheel, and at least two hydraulic cylinders 126, 129 each with a piston 125, 130 and a cam follower attached to either the cylinder or piston such that rotation of the cam causes reciprocation of the two relative to each other. There is also a hydraulic circuit C connecting the cylinders together, and a master brake valve 113 actuatable by a user input device (e.g. foot brake pedal with master cylinder 112) to control fluid flow around the circuit such that obstruction of fluid flow by the valve inhibits or prevents reciprocation of the cylinder and hence rotation of the cam. There is also an energy recovery system (see figure 22) configured to transfer energy from the hydraulic fluid flowing in the hydraulic circuit to generate electricity (e.g. via an alternator or dynamo) and/or to recover heat from the hydraulic fluid flowing in the hydraulic circuit (e.g. via a heat exchanger coupled to the vehicle air conditioning or a cooling system for cargo).
