A wearable rider-protection device 10 has a hollow cowl 12 with a transparent front screen 16 extending from a shell portion 18. A support arrangement (22, Figure 1) engages with the rider’s shoulders and torso to support the cowl. In use, the shell covers the shoulders and at least part of the riders back. When the rider is prone or forwardly inclined, the rider can look forward through the screen portion. The cowl may be teardrop shaped when viewed in plan, and may be downwardly convex in cross-section, forming side portions that may be shallow enough that the rider’s limbs are uncovered and unobstructed in use. The support arrangement may have shoulder straps (24) and a torso girdle (26) that fix the cowl position relative to the rider’s torso. The rider may be able to stand upright wearing the device. The device may comprise fibre reinforced composite material or Kevlar.
