A data map of a railway route 10 is constructed by measuring position and orientation of a train A, B at locations along the route in terms of distance from a known location, bearing, cant and gradient and storing the resultant data as a location profile. Thereafter, current values of distance, bearing, cant and gradient are measured at a train to provide current location profile data. This is compared to the data map to derive the train’s current location as the location for which the stored and current data correspond. The train may pass absolute position modules (e.g. balises 1-5) and the distance may be measured there-from. The location profile data may be measured by onboard sensors (e.g. tachometer 32, digital compass 34, 3-axis gyroscope 36, 3-axis accelerometer 38 and doppler radar 39, Figs.2-3). The train position may be derived by onboard system 40 or remote train control centre 20.
