A hardware interface module 304 is provided for a system controlling a start-stop feature for stopping an internal combustion engine (202 fig 2) of a vehicle during periods of expected extended idling. The interface module allows an engine control unit (ECU 300 fig 3) to send signals to and receive signals from other components of the vehicle so that they can provide input into a start-stop control module (302 fig 3) of the ECU (300) to affect when the engine (202) is stopped and restarted. The input comprises an engine shutdown inhibit signal generated based on an operator input to other components. The inhibit signal indicates an operator intent to steer the vehicle and an implement position signal indicating that an implement 402 powered by the engine (202) is in use or will move. The invention advantageously provides an engine shutdown inhibit signal preventing the ECU 300 from automatically stopping the engine (202) when inappropriate. The use of an interface 304 also avoids the revealing of OEM software.
