An electronic control unit (ECU) 108 controls an internal combustion engine (ICE) 102 that drives a vehicle 100 and provides power to other components of the vehicle such as a hydraulic motor 104 that may control a blade 106. The ECU includes a start-stop module (302, fig.3) and interfaces with an OEM hardware interface module 112 to send and receive data from other components of the vehicle such as hydraulic pump controller 110. The engine may be stopped after a period of inactivity in order ot conserve fuel but the start-stop system may be inhibited if a component is determined as having a demand on the engine such as the hydraulic motor, steering or joystick input, PTO or air conditioning requirements. The ICE may be part of a hybrid powertrain.
