An aircraft position communication system comprises wireless communication device 10a and central server 60. The wireless communication device receives aircraft position data APD1 associated with first aircraft 70a from a global positioning system and transmits the aircraft position data to the central server via a mobile phone cell tower. The central server stores and processes the aircraft position data transmitted from the wireless communication device and aircraft position data APD2 associated with second aircraft 10b. The central server selectively transmits the aircraft position data associated with the second aircraft to the wireless communication device via mobile cell tower 50 and alerts the first aircraft to the position of the second aircraft if the second aircraft position is within a pre-determined range of the first aircraft position. The alert may be issued when flight paths extrapolated from first and second aircraft bearings B1, B2 are within a threshold intersection distance, the level of alert being determined by the proximity of the extrapolated flight paths to the threshold intersection distance.
