A period of time that a vehicle (101 fig. 2) propulsion will be deactivated at a traffic stop (230) is predicted 310 and a distance (220) for a vehicle to coast without input from the vehicle propulsion to stop the vehicle at the traffic stop is determined 315. If the predicted period of time exceeds a time threshold then the vehicle propulsion is deactivated when the vehicle reaches a start (225) of the predicted distance. If the predetermined threshold is not met then the vehicle propulsion may be maintained. The vehicle may comprise a start stop system that restarts the engine or motor when the predicted period of time ends.
