A pedal cycle stand assembly 10 includes a stand 12 which is attachable to a pedal cycle frame 14 and which is configured to be moveable relative to the pedal cycle frame 14 between a stowed position and a deployed position. The stand 12 is arranged to engage with the ground surface 16 when it is in the deployed position so as to support the pedal cycle, and to be spaced away from the ground surface 16 when it is in the stowed position. The pedal cycle stand assembly 10 further includes an electronic locking mechanism 18 which has a lock state and a release state. The locking mechanism 18 is configured to lock the stand 12 in the deployed position when the locking mechanism 18 is in the lock state, and to permit the stand 12 to move to the stowed position when the locking mechanism 18 is in the release state. The pedal cycle stand assembly 10 further still includes a control assembly 20 which has a control unit 22 in electrical communication with the locking mechanism 18. The control unit 22 is configured to receive an authorised signal (46, figure 4a) and to send a control signal (48, figure 4a) to the locking mechanism 18 to cause the locking mechanism 18 to operate in the lock state or the release state based on the authorised signal 46. The stand may also engage a drive chain of the pedal cycle when deployed, in order to restrict movement thereof.
