A method comprising determining a driving-acceptable region defined by coordinates relative to a first vehicle, wherein the region includes coordinates of the size and location of other vehicles and the roadway, and upon determining a fault, piloting the first vehicle to a stop within the region. The vehicle may operate the brakes, steering or powertrain to achieve this. The determination may include not predicting with greater than or equal to 99.9% probability that the first vehicle can be safely piloted. The first vehicle may receive information via sensors or network interfaces. Preferably, two sets of polynomial coefficients based on the location and size of other vehicles, the roadway, and traffic objections are used to determine the region. Additionally, forming polygons defined by the vertices of the other vehicles may be used to determine the region. Velocity vectors could also be utilised. Predetermined rates of change may be used to modify polynomial equations, wherein the rates of change limit the centripetal forces within predetermined limits.
