A motor and gearbox combination in which the gearbox is at least partly included within the volume of the motor, or vice versa. An example would be for the volume of the gearbox (fig 1, V2) to be included into the volume of the motor (fig 2, V2). In one example a cycloidcal reduction is incorporated into an outrunner motor, with the motor including a rotor 10, stator 11 and shaft 20, and the gearbox including cycloidal disk 24, and eccentric bearing 22, an output bearing journal 23 and an output flange 16. This arrangement is particularly suited to stairlifts due to its flat profile. The device further incorporates a detection facility configured to detect a break in the drive between the input and the output of the gearbox. An example of this system works by detecting relative movement between the flange 16 and the cycloidal disc 24, which will occur should the drive pins 30 break. This is achieved by detector pins 35. These pass through recess 36 and will interact with a trigger mechanism in the event of a failure, the trigger mechanism can then lock the gearbox.
