A drive system, e.g. for an elevator or stairlift, is mounted to engage over and drive with respect to a member 11. The drive system having first and second diablo-type roller sets 10 which are engageable with the member 11 at locations spaced along a member axis (14, fig 1). First and second drive motors 37 are associated with the first and second roller sets 10 and a control facility (46, fig 8) is configured to allow selective operation of the first and second drive motors 37 to effect displacement of the drive system both along, and about, the member axis (14). Each roller set may comprise three rollers equally spaced about a periphery of the member 11 and within a swept area of constant length. The drive motors 37 may rotate at the same or different speeds and in the same or different directions. A chassis (40) may be positioned between the roller sets.
