Disclosed is a process comprising receiving image data of a target vehicle, associating at least two geometric shapes with the image data, monitoring the shapes for a condition indicative of the target vehicle moving to avoid a roadway obstacle, and in response to determining the condition, providing a steering instruction to avoid the obstacle. The geometric shapes may include a first shape associated with an upper rear portion of the target vehicle and a second shape associated with a lower rear portion of the target vehicle. These shapes may be rectangles. At least a portion of the geometric shapes may be mapped to a peripheral outline of a rear view of the target vehicle. The determination may be the lateral displacement of the geometric shapes. The process may include using the image data to determine that an indicator signal has not been actuated and only swerving to avoid if this there is no indicator signal. The process may also use GPS to determine whether a portion of the roadway is straight or curved. Also disclosed are corresponding claims for computers with executable programs.
