Parking an autonomous vehicle in echelon parking in case of a problem Upon determining that one of a driver condition and a subsystem fault preventing continued operation has occurred, certain actions are taken by an autonomously operating vehicle 12. An appropriate road-side location 38 for parking is identified. The vehicle is maneuvered to the appropriate road side location. The vehicle is oriented to a specified acute angle α to an adjacent traffic lane i.e. echelon or angled parking. The angle may be reduced from 45° to accommodate an obstacle in the road shoulder. The driver condition may be a lack of response from the driver to a request to operate the vehicle in a manual mode. The subsystem fault may be a fault in the steering system, drive motor, brake system, tire or a vehicle impact. The vehicle may only operate autonomously in a predetermined geographic area and the driver may be prompted to take over control of the vehicle when exiting this area.
