A method for determining lane information includes receiving perception data from at least two sensors, the at least two sensors including a rear facing camera of a vehicle 110. The other sensors could be radar, LIDAR or infrared 106-114. The method includes determining, based on the perception data, a number of lanes on a roadway (200) within a field of view captured by the perception data using a neural network. The method further includes providing an indication of the number of lanes to an automated driving system 102 or driving assistance system. The method could also comprise determining road slope and collision avoidance options. The lane information may form part of the drive history 128 of the vehicle and could also be broadcast to other automated or assisted vehicles.
