A vehicle system includes a first vehicle component 110A, such as a braking module, at least partially controlling a vehicle action and a second vehicle component 110B, such as an accelerator module, at least partially controlling a vehicle action. A coordination controller 120 detects a first vehicle component failure, possibly by receiving a signal from arbitration block 125, selects a vehicle mode (315 fig.3) and allocates workloads of the first vehicle component and the second vehicle component according to that mode. First and second components may be linked by actuators to allow the second component to control the first component system, in the event of a first component failure, when commanded to do so by the coordination controller thus allowing at least partial system redundancy. The controller may be programmed to determine a component failure based on a driver condition, vehicle traction capability, power supply operability, traffic condition, ambient temperature or distance to a destination.
