A method for avoiding collisions between a host vehicle and target vehicles involve first identifying a plurality of targets 205. A path or trajectory for each target is predicted 210. A threat number for each target is determined 215 based at least in part on the predicted paths. The threat number indicates a probability or likelihood of a collision between the respective target and a host vehicle. One or more vehicle subsystems in the host vehicle is actuated based on the threat numbers 230. The threat number may be based on a speed, acceleration, position or projected path of the target and the distance between the host and the target. The host vehicle subsystems may include braking, steering or propulsion. The subsystems may act to move the host away from the projected paths of the targets, or brake or slow the host vehicle, if the threat numbers are above a threshold. The method may identify crossing or intersection points 220 where the host and target projected paths meet.
