Apparatus for use with a heave motion detecting sensor has a main chassis 105, a drive assembly (fig 2, 210) with a drive gear 215. A lifting column 170 is translatably placed in the main chassis and has a linear gear rack 180 that runs along a longitudinal axis. A pinion (250, fig 2a) is engaged with the linear gear rack such that rotation of the pinion is coupled to translation of the lifting column in main chassis along the longitudinal axis. A control circuitry is operative to command the drive assembly to cause the lifting column to translate in the main chassis based on heave motion detected by the sensor. The drive assembly may comprise an electric motor, an electromagnetic brake and/or a gearbox. A transfer gear may couple the pinion with the drive gear. The associated sensor, which may be mounted to the apparatus, may comprise a motion reference unit. The apparatus may further comprise a battery, a shear stop and a kinetic energy recovery system and a plurality of additional drive assemblies.
