A rear-facing camera on a vehicle is used to predict a conflict between forward motion of the vehicle and a moving pedestrian. A computer system identifies a pedestrian in the image received from the camera, and predicts their future motion, and notifies a driver-assistance or automated driving system if the vehicle and pedestrian are at risk of colliding. Pedestrians may be identified using neural networks to first identify likely locations of pedestrians and then to process those locations to identify pedestrians therein. This may involve using a low-resolution saliency map of locations in the received images, and then processing the salient regions of the images at full resolution. The prediction of the pedestrians motion may involve a velocity and location of the pedestrian relative to the vehicle. The camera may be a back-up camera for reversing, and the images may be captured while the vehicle is in a forward gear.
