A method and system for dampening lateral disturbances to a vehicle are provided. Information relating to the operation of the vehicle, such as the terrain ahead of the vehicle, lateral acceleration, vehicle speed and forces on wheels 34a, 34b, is received, optionally in the form of electrical signals representative of that information. The method determines whether one or more predetermined conditions, representing conditions under which lateral disturbance is possible, are met; these may include a parameter such as presence of steering input, vehicle speed and whether the force applied by wheels 34a, 34b to steering assembly 18 exceeds a threshold. When at least certain of the predetermined conditions are met, a lateral disturbance to the vehicle is automatically damped by stiffening a portion of a steering assembly 18 of the vehicle, typically by providing a force on the steering assembly using a motor 36 or by providing braking force using a braking device 37.
