A vehicle system comprising a processing device (105 Fig 1) programmed to determine, from a boundary signal, whether the host vehicle (100 Fig 1) is performing a lane splitting maneuver. If so, the device transmits a lane splitting signal. The boundary signal represents the lane boundary location relative to the host vehicle and is output by a lane detector which may comprise an ultrasound, navigation, LIDAR or infrared sensor or a camera. If the lane boundary is aligned with (or within a predetermined distance of) the centre axis 125 of the host vehicle (100 Fig 1), then the vehicle may be determined to be lane splitting. A lane splitting signal is sent from the processing device (105 Fig 1) to a communications device and wirelessly broadcast to nearby vehicles 135. Nearby vehicles 135 may have means (155 Fig 6) to receive, process (800 Fig 8) and indicate to their occupants that the host vehicle (100 Fig 1) is lane splitting.
