A vehicle system 400 includes a processing device programmed to determine an ignition state and a vehicle speed 415. The ignition state may be determined based on the key position 405, 420. The processing device powers at least one vehicle subsystem 410 if the ignition state is off and the vehicle speed is above a predetermined threshold. The processing device may disable the vehicle subsystem 425 when the vehicle speed falls below the predetermined threshold. The vehicle subsystems may be interior or exterior lights, entertainment system (Fig.3, 150), transmission control module, powertrain control module, brake system, cluster controller, body control module, restraint control module, occupant classification system, a passenger airbag indicator, power steering system, power door or windows etc. The device may implement a situational override 430, which disables certain subsystems if the vehicle is towing, parked, in assembly mode, or in a remote start mode. A method for achieving the same result is also claimed.
