A power steering apparatus includes a housing 20 containing a worm 130 driven by a motor and a worm wheel 120 engaged with worm 130 and transmitting an assist force to a steering shaft (114, Figure 1). A plug 23 has a male thread 24 on an outer peripheral surface and is screwed into a female thread 25 on housing 20, with an elastic member 50 having one end supported by worm 130 and another by plug 23, to give a preload between worm 130 and worm wheel 120; the position of plug 23 is adjustable to adjust the preload. A fixing member 80, such as a locking nut or caulking, is provided on plug 23 to prevent rotation of plug 23 relative to housing 20. Plug 23 may have an aperture 28 for receiving a gauge head (71, Figure 5) for measuring the preload. Also disclosed is a method of adjusting the preload involving adjusting the position of plug 23 and fixing the plug in a position corresponding to a desired preload value.
