A steering or control mechanism comprises a steering control system operable between a first extreme position, a neutral position and a second extreme position. Each of the first and the second extreme positions correspond to an extreme change in the direction of travel. The neutral position corresponds to a constant direction of travel. A change in direction of rotation of an actuator causes said steering control system to automatically alter its position from a position between one extreme position and the neutral position to a position between neutral and the other extreme position. Thus the direction of movement of the actuator only has to be reversed for the apparatus to steer the opposite way, rather than having to completely reverse the position of the actuator.
