Hybrid drive system having engine 121, electric motor / generator 123, electrical storage (e.g. battery) 150, transmission / driveline 124, 130, controller 140, and driver input (e.g. paddle shift / adaptive cruise control speed selector) 169. In a first mode, engine 121 and or electric machine 123 provide drive torque. In a second mode a charge torque from driveline 130 is converted into electrical power to charge battery 150 (i.e. regenerative braking). Magnitude of charge torque is dynamically adjustable through driver input 169, which may be speed selector / transmission speed ratio selector. Driver input 169 may comprise first 169a and second 169b actuators to decrease and increase magnitude of charge torque in order to respectively increase and decrease vehicle speed. Demand torque reduction may depend on accelerator pedal 161 position. Claims are also included to a computer program, computer readable medium, controller, vehicle, and method of use.
