A vehicle collision warning system repeatedly determines a geographic location and movement direction of a first mobile device 20 carried in a vehicle 200. It determines a geographic area 220 covered by the vehicle based on a type of the vehicle and the determined movement direction DIR. It receives a geographic location of second mobile devices 30, 40, 50 via a server (10, Fig.1) and activates an alarm if the received geographic location approaches the vehicle footprint. The mobile devices may be mobile telephones. The second mobile devices may be carried by vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists whose position and mode of transport may be displayed to the vehicles driver on a map.
